Learn to easily and effectively clean linens, duvet covers and comforters.

Cleaning Bed Linens and Duvet Covers

  • Machine wash your bed linens and duvet cover every 1-2 weeks on the hottest setting to help kill allergens and dust mites. Many newer washers have a sanitary or extra hot setting.
  • If you use allergy encasings over your pillows, comforter or mattress to trap dust mites, only clean the encasings when absolutely necessary. Removing them will release the allergens.
  • To get your white linens bright again, soak them overnight in a tub of extra hot water with a mixture of 1 cup laundry detergent, 1 cup powdered dishwasher detergent, 1 cup borax and 1/2 cup bleach. Then wash them in the washing machine on the hottest setting.

Tip: Easily put your duvet cover back on by turning it inside out and spreading it out on the bed. Spread the comforter on top of the cover and fasten the corners with clips. Then flip the cover right side out, keeping the comforter inside, and refasten the bottom. Hold it at the bottom and give it a good shake.

Cleaning Comforters

  • Vacuum both sides of your comforter with the brush attachment.
  • Pre-treat stains with a stain remover and a toothbrush and let it set overnight.
  • If your comforter is washable and can fit in your washer, wash it on the gentle cycle. If not, have it professionally cleaned.
  • Dry the comforter on the lowest setting to prevent charring. Pause the cycle periodically and turn the comforter to ensure it dries all the way through.
  • Wash it every 2-3 months to help reduce allergens.

Tip: A comforter can last decades when properly cared for. Make it last by using a duvet cover and replace the cover whenever you’re ready to update your bedroom décor.
